# Content gaps

> The prompts where an AI names or cites a competitor instead of you — and what to publish about it.

A content gap is a prompt where the AI had an answer and it wasn't yours. This tab is the shortest route from "our GEO score is low" to "here's what to write."

The red badge on **AI Visibility (GEO)** in the sidebar is your open gap count.

## What counts as a gap

Two of the four prompt outcomes produce a gap:

| Situation                                                         | Gap type        | The fix                                            |
| ----------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------- | -------------------------------------------------- |
| **Named, not cited** — the engine knows you but sourced elsewhere | Content gap | Publish a page worth citing for that prompt |
| **Cited, not named** — your page is a source but you go unnamed | Positioning gap | Make the brand and its claim explicit on that page |

Gaps where a competitor was cited instead are flagged with that competitor's name, so you can see who is taking the answer.

## How gaps are ranked

Each gap carries an **impact** level — **Critical**, **High**, **Medium**, **Low** — based on how much closing it would move your score, and how much intent sits behind the prompt. Critical-impact gaps sit at the top of the list and also surface on the overview as **Critical gaps**.

## Anatomy of a gap

Each entry gives you:

* The **prompt** and its **intent type**
* Which **platforms** show the gap
* The **competitor** being cited instead, if any
* The **sources** the engine used
* **What to publish** — the content angle that would close it

## Working the list

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start with Critical">
    Impact ranking already did the prioritisation. Don't re-sort by what feels easiest.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Group by theme">
    Several gaps usually collapse into one comprehensive page. A single strong comparison page can close a whole cluster of comparison prompts.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Send it to the Blog Agent">
    Add the theme as a topic in [Blog Agent](/content/blog-agent) and generate a post built to be cited.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check crawlability">
    A published page that AI crawlers can't fetch closes nothing. Confirm in [Site Audit → AI Crawlability](/search/site-audit).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Re-run and verify">
    Run AI Visibility again and confirm the prompt moved to *named and cited*.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  Publishing usually isn't enough on its own. Engines cite pages that answer the prompt directly, in the first screen, in plain language — not pages that bury the answer under a preamble.
</Tip>
